There is no universal best alternative
The best candidate is the one that fits your applications, customer boundaries and operating skills. Ubuntu compatibility is a first filter, not a reason to select a panel by itself. The current cPanel requirements document Ubuntu 24.04, so moving away from cPanel is not the only way to use Ubuntu.
This shortlist covers conventional hosting rather than every server-management product. Begin with web, database, email, DNS and customer-access requirements. If mail or DNS will be external, record who operates it and how the application will authenticate. A panel deliberately omitting a service may still be appropriate for a different hosting model.
Commercial account management versus open-source operation
EzePanel and DirectAdmin are worth comparing for account-oriented hosting; their license ceilings and reseller conditions differ. Plesk is useful to evaluate when its site-management and extension ecosystem matches your requirements. Confirm each vendor’s current edition rather than making assumptions from a product name.
HestiaCP and Virtualmin provide open-source paths. That can reduce recurring software charges without making administration, support or recovery free. Virtualmin’s GPL and Professional editions are distinct. Check the installation support grade and available feature set instead of treating all documentation as a promise for every edition.
Use a decision scorecard, not a popularity ranking
List requirements as required, useful or unnecessary. Give each candidate a short operating test: create two customer identities, configure a site, deliver mail through the intended service and restore one backup. Record unsupported items explicitly. Do not award points for an interface label that has not been exercised.
Resource controls need special attention on shared servers. Ask which process boundary applies, how package overrides resolve and what happens when an account reaches its limit. A licensing allowance is not reserved hardware. Compare dependency behavior and user-visible failure as well as maximum workload counts.
Migration can outweigh the license saving
Inventory each source account’s files, databases, mail, DNS, certificates, scheduled work and custom settings. Determine what the destination can import and what the operator must recreate. Keep the source available until representative application actions and mail flow pass.
EzePanel’s complete automatic cross-panel importer is not verified. Its migration guides support operator-led planning. Other candidates have their own migration conditions, so check the exact supported source and destination. A generic migration claim is not a transfer acceptance test, and this guide does not promise zero downtime.
Shortlist for your operating model
For a small independently managed VPS, compare the total stack and support you will maintain. For a hosting company, prioritize separate customer boundaries, packages, reseller permissions and recovery procedures. For an agency, test whether the selected edition provides the site and customer structure your staff needs.
Include cPanel itself in the final comparison when existing knowledge or integrations make changing expensive. This is an EzePanel editorial shortlist, not a sponsored ranking, independent benchmark or claim that every alternative is cheaper. Use the linked official requirements and current quotes before purchasing.

Put EzePanel through a practical Ubuntu evaluation
EzePanel is a credible shortlist candidate when you want conventional hosting services and connected server operations on Ubuntu. The free trial lets an eligible customer evaluate a small real installation without a card. Use it to gather your own evidence rather than accepting a vendor ranking as proof.

- Try one hosting account with the published website, mailbox and database limits.
- Review access controls, sessions and the security workflow.
- Test a backup restore and a failed operation before moving a customer.
Frequently asked questions
Must I leave cPanel to host on Ubuntu?
No. cPanel documents Ubuntu 24.04 support. Check its current release requirements.
Which alternative is cheapest?
It depends on edition, customer count, extensions and administration. Open-source licensing does not eliminate operating cost.
Is this a performance ranking?
No. No comparable benchmark was performed; the table describes decision criteria.
